Deepak Chikara

This paper deals with multi-class tandem queuing model to describe the dynamics of a system where priorities to the customers are assigned. It is assumed that there are finite intermediate buffer between k stations. An approximation method based on decomposition process is suggested to obtain the queue and in the buffer, the average waiting time etc. are obtained. The analytical results are validated by taking numerical illustration.

Laplace Transforms

Dilip Kumar Chakraborty & Sabyasachi Sen

The Laplace transform of a function is itself a function in the transform space.

The Laplace transform is a kind of operation by virtue of which one can find the Laplace transform of a given function by involving the classical process of integration and is conventionally indicated by a special symbol L, called the Laplace operator. The operator which when operated on a function, results in new function of another variable in the transform space. This operator can be viewed as the mapping (or transformation) of a function say f(t), in t-domain into another function F(s) in s-domain. Here F(s) is said to be the Laplace transform of the function f(t) and is denoted by L{f(t)} =F(s).

An Introduction to Mobile Communication & Related Issues

Santanu Bhattacharya

With the growth of mobile phone usage, people are increasingly able to communicate with other people when they are mobile, using the phone to chat by voice and text (SMS). However, as people have become more dependent on computer information systems, the requirement of the information available on their desktop or the network is becoming increasingly important when they are mobile too.

Some Private Aspects of Computer Systems

Chanchal Guha Roy

During the last couple of decades, computers have shown that they have the power to reshape nations. They can take the effective measure to develop our modern society in a wide variety of ways. The image of a computer is that of an electronic brain having intelligence and memory. Needless to say that intelligence depends mainly on two factors: i) accumulation of information, and ii) processing of information. Computer have helped us in many respects by reducing our manual works, speeding up communications, improving the quality of our works, etc. Nowadays, computers are not only used in scientific or business arena, but also found in fashion technology, graphics design, architecture, interior decoration, including wireless communication and mobile computing.

In order to visualise the basic aspects of mobile computing, we need to know a few interesting activities of a computer system. Thus this lecture is divided into tow parts. The first part covers a simple introduction to some fundamental aspects associated with computer studies, whereas the second part concerns with a brief discussion on the basic features of operating system. Finally, some important MS-DOS commands and UNIX commands are described.

Impact of Information Technology on Human

Resource Management (HRM)

Alok Mishra

The objective of above study is to assess observations of the various frontier and cutting-edge technologies impact on Human Resource Management (HRM) in national and multinationals organizations in present global liberalization of economy. Information and Information Technology are the key drivers of the Information era. The Information age has reached in knowledge based industrial revolution. Enterprises are networked and use IT Technologies to survive, grow and flourish in a highly competitive business environment of today. Consequently we can also study observations on role HRM Professionals in IT sector in present scenario.

The paper aims to discuss about the conception of watershed Management Program mentioning different issues arising to implement including its alternate options and remedial measures

Facts On Fats – Oils

The right and the wrong

Dr. Chitta Ranjan Santra

The debate on fatty and oily foods and increased heart disease is on the boil. The advertisements by edible oil companies add fuel to the fire. People are confused – which oil they would use, Butter or margarine, Sunflower Oil or Mustard Oil? How much exercise? Alcohol or no alcohol? This article is an attempt to get a correct answer to the above questions.

Teaching in Compiler Design

P. K. Mahanti, Musbah Aqel

The objective of teaching laboratory based subject is to enhance the skills of the students in the various directions such as better programming skill, team work and good practical Exposure to compiler design that would be possible using traditional teaching based on Lectures and assignments.

Information Technology :

P. K. Mahanti

The purpose of this article is to present an overview of information technology concepts and boarder IT concerns in education, organization, and commerce.

Aspirin – The Harbinger in Modern Medicine

Dr. Tarun Kumar Gupta

Aspirin or Acetyl Salicylic Acid a non-optical anti-inflammatory analgesic is known to the mankind for a long time. It is an active molecule for mitigating headache, body ache, pain and also in relieving fever. This anti-inflammatory efficacy of this regimen is due to inhibition of the enzyme component that converts 20 c fatty acid-the Arachidonic acid into prostaglandins (PGs), potent vasoconstrictor in our body.

Again, PGs can induce aggregation of platelets or thrombocytes within the blood vessels due to clogging of their lumen through cholesterol deposits (atherosclerosis). It is also an established fact that PGs van trigger the liberation of Thromboxances (TXAs), Pg-related compounds from the disintegrated platelets at the formation of ‘blood clot’ inside the blood vessels that supply the heart and brain. And due to this vascular occlusion ‘heart attack’ and ‘Cerebral stroke’ ensure.

Aspirin can also inhibit the enzyme complexes that catalyze PGs into TXAs thereby acting as a thrombolytic agents. In this paper an attempt has been made to elucidate the details of the procedure involved in Aspirin-induced inhibition of PGs and TXAs synthesis and as well as other detrimental beneficial and ameliorating effects of Aspirin, a congent anti-platelet drug.

Reports on Street Hawkers observing the National and International Status:

Street Hawking as a Profession has been in existence in India since time immemorial. The hawkers are unique phenomena in all metropolitan cities of India . The practice of street hawking might have begun centuries ago. In those early days these sellers of various articles of daily household necessity were really hawkers in the true sense of the term. Their calls and cries were heard during noon in all seasons as they carried their wares in baskets and moved from one locality of a city or town to another. The passing of decades in the history of the country has seen so many events and calamities taking place in the lives of the people. Population has taken a quantum jump in sheer number, particularly in the last fifty/sixty years. The country has undergone a rapid development from an essentially agriculture-based economy to the introduction of industries, and with it came mechanization of the means of production. The catastrophic partition of the country in 1947 witnessed an unending flow of uprooted million to border-skirting states of India . The migration of starving refugees still continues; only the number has come down to a steady trickle. Thousands of uprooted families have spread themselves in various towns and cities. The employment situation in most of the service-sectors is, plainly speaking, discouraging enough. To fend for themselves, the members of such families have chosen the means of earning by hawking on streets.

This is exactly the backdrop against which the issue of Street Hawkers in Kolkata should be appreciated. Kolkata’s hawkers are a unique lot. Most of their families have migrated from the erstwhile East Pakistan or Post ’71 Bangla Desh to settle in the outskirts of the city. Many of them, of course, have somehow managed an overhead roof for themselves in some nook or corner of this expanding and receptive metropolis. But still, most of the street hawkers in Kolkata arrive in the city in the morning, stay and sell their wares through out the day, and return to their suburban homes at night. The passage of days, months and years has hardly changed their daily routine. One often hears the proud assertion that every thing – from a pin to an elephant – is available with the Kolkata street hawkers.

Now, there is a natural tendency among the hawkers to concentrate at places which are most frequented by prospective customers from financially viable locality. The hawkers trade in an astounding variety of article from food item for daily consumption of students, workers, office goers to household necessities and dainty decorative pieces. Most of them have ceased to be hawkers in the traditional sense. They select some vantage places to display their items for sale and occupy these places through the years.

The hawkers in Kolkata are a ubiquitous lot. They are to be found in the central downtown area of the city during office hours dishing out their cheap and tasty fares. They occupy the sides of footpaths in front of the schools and colleges and office buildings. But their concentration is mostly pronounced in well-heeled residential-cum-business localities like Gariahat, Lake Market , Bhawanipore, Shyambazar and dozens of such places.

The problem of street hawking is not only a national issue but also an international one. Lack of gainful employment coupled with poverty in rural areas has pushed people out of their villages in search of a better existence in the cities. These migrants do not possess the skills or the education to enable them to find better paid, secured employment in formal sectors and so they have to settle their work in the informal sectors. The first category, namely low skill rural migrants, exists in all countries of Asia such as India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, and Vietnam etc. Again some workers who were earlier in the formal sectors, lost their jobs because of closures, downsizing or merger in the industries and had to seek low-paid work in the informal sectors in order to survive. The second category, namely, workers who were earlier in the formal sectors, exists in the countries like Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and India etc.

The number of street vendors in Bangladesh is large. According to information from Dhaka City Corporation, there are around 90,000 street vendors and here street vending is considered as an illegal trade and the street vendors face constant harassment from the authorities. The vendors have to pay a sizeable part of their income as bribes in order to keep playing their trade.

Street Vendors in Sri Lanka appear to be in a slightly better position than their counterparts in Bangladesh and India . Street vending in most urban areas is not totally illegal and vendors can carry on their trade on the pavements by paying a daily tax to the municipal council. Despite gaining some legal recognition, vendors are evicted if the municipal council feels that they cause problems to the general public.

The most observable fact about Bangkok is its street vendors. Almost every street in this city has street vendors selling an array of items-clothes, curios, electronic items and a wide variety of cooked and raw food. In fact, food vendors of Bangkok are known for their cheap but nutritious fare. The municipal authorities in Bangkok have demarcated sites where street vendors can operate. There are such 287 sites in the city. There are also 14 sites on private land. The sites officially allotted for street vending are not sufficient for accommodating all street vendors. Moreover, these areas do not cover all sections of the city and hence customers are not catered to.

This led the street vendors operating in unauthorized areas. There are 407 sites where operate in the sites that are unauthorized.

Singapore is the only country in the world where all street vendors are licensed. It is the duty of Hawkers’ Department to check that there are no unlicensed hawkers and it issues licenses to those waiting to hawk goods on the pavements. One significant fact about street vendors in Singapore is that over the past 30 years they have helped to keep the cost of living down since workers, students and the poorer sections depend on them for their daily necessities, including their meals.

The significant feature about Malaysia is that it is one of the few countries in Asia that has given some form of recognition

to street vendors . In 1990, Malaysia formulated the National Policy on Hawkers. The regulation and control of street vendors is under the department of hawkers and petty traders (DHPT) established in 1986. According to DHPT the number of licensed street vendors rose by 30% between 1990 and 2000.

Street Vendors play an important role in urban Vietnam’s commerce. They provide low priced goods and generate employment for a large number of people, specially women.
In 1989 the Vietnamese government adopted a law on protection of people’s health. A survey on food samples in the Hanoi showed that 47% were microbiologically unsafe. Within a few years the scene changed and 23.4% of the food vendors had changed their unhygienic practices. The government has adopted two practices for ensuring safer street food, namely, monitoring street food vendors through a licensed system and educating and training them on hygiene.

Street Hawkers in Vietnam

The government of South Korea, like most of other governments in Asia, is insensitive to the problems of urban poor. Street vendors and slum dwellers are under constant attack by the government. Another peculiar feature about South Korea is that the government hire gangsters to evict street vendors and slum dwellers. The economic crisis in South Korea in 1998 resulted in massive restructuring. As a result several workers in the formal sectors lost their jobs and had to move to informal sectors. At present Seoul has around 8,00,000 street vendors.

Unfortunately, the governments in these countries have more or less refused to recognize street vending as a legal activity and they in fact view these vendors as irritants to the city’s development. Even in the countries like Vietnam and Cambodia, which do not have a large formal sector, the governments did not give legal recognition to street vending. India has recently framed a national policy for street vendors, which if implemented, will provide security to them. At present, the street vendors face constant harassment from the authorities.
