Gerontology

Aging is a multidisciplinary field of study. This means that the study of aging combines or integrates introduction from several seperate areas, along with content from many other areas of study, such, as public policy, humanities and economics. Gerontology is the study of the aging process of individuals as they grow from middle age to later life.

It includes

The study of physical, mental and social changes in older people as they age.

The investigation of the changes in society resulting from our aging population.

The application of this knowledge to policies and programmes. As a result of the multidisciplinary focus on gerontology, professionals from diverse fields of gerentology call themselves"Gerontologist" .

Geriatrics is the study of health and disease in later life.

The comprehensive health care of older persons and the well being of their informal caregiver. Aging populations are on the rise world wide. This means that people are living longer and the number of older persons are increasing. These trends are evident in our society, as well as in many countries around the world. In India, of those born in the 19th century, nearly half have died before they were 50 years old. People born today can expect to live beyond their 75th year. In the 19th century about one in 40 Indians was over 95; today one in eight is over 65. Thus this age group is growing the fastest in our society and in many other countries is the "very old"; the growth of people aged 95 and over will continue into the future. By the middle of the 21st century, one in ten Indians will be over 65. These growth trends will result in a demand for professionals with knowledge and expertise in aging. Expanded career opportunities in gerentology and geriatrics are frorecast in many disciplines and professions. So the field of aging is very diverse. This diversity exists in part because the older persons are very differnt persons from each other in many ways, mostly in our country, as our country as a whole has diversity in language, culture, knowledge & education.
