Routing Protocols for Mobile, Ad hoc Networks

Samir R. Das

Ad hoc network is a self-organizing wireless network made up of mobile hosts. Each host in the network double as a router so that communication between hosts outside radio range can be maintained. In this article we review the state-of-the-art research on distributed routing protocols for ad hoc networks. We focus most of our attention on the new generation, proactive routing protocols and contrast them with the more traditional reactive protocols. We also comment on their relative performances.

A Vision of Organization-wide Information Sharing with Proactive Agents

Sandip Sen & Sumit Ghosh

We claim that currently available reactive knowledge sources that allow only structured querying are inadequate for the information requirements of modern, distributed, and dynamic organization. Our basic assumption is that the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization is largely determined by the relevance and comprehensiveness of the information that is available to decision-makers at all times. To aid this process, we propose the use of proactive information agents who can respond to informal, semi-structured queries with requested as well as relevant information. In this paper, we present our vision of an organization wide network of intelligent agents that effectively disseminates information to users who can use them. A major advantage of this paradigm shift is that instead of the user modeling the system, we are proposing the development of an information system that models the user.

Parametric Control of Follicular Maturation in Vivo

Arun Kumar Mandal, Dr. Dilip Kumar Chakrabarty, Debasish Saha, and Anjan Chatterjee

In  general follicular maturation depends mainly upon neuroendocrinal mechanisms i.e., Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinising Hormone (LH) secreted by anterior pituitary and Estradiol (E 2 ) secreted by ovary. In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the exogenous drug and hormonal control of follicular size in fertile women is undertaken using a mathematical model of the dynamics of hormone and follicle development cycle interaction in serum. Mathematical optimization techniques are applied to the model to device hormone administration programs for the control of follicular size and retrieval of matured oocyte in infertile women. This model is based upon a series of clinical studies on women in the age group (22-37) years. In this problem one specific compartmental model which is constructed where a linear relationship is considered between the hormone and the follicle size, and the exogenous hormone enters the remote compartment also in a linear independent fashion.

Knowledge-Based System for Troubleshooting Complex Equipment

Kalyan Moy Gupta

The use of knowledge-based systems (KBS) has become a necessity for effective troubleshooting of complex equipment. However, the decision domain of complex equipment  presents many challenges for KBS Development such as the size and the complexity of domain and the end user domain expertise. In these domains, the conventional KBS paradigms such as rule-based systems and model-based systems are limited by their brittleness and the lack of flexibility. Case-based decision support has emerged as a suitable KBS paradigm to address the dynamics and complexity of these domains. Case-based systems make use of cases (i.e., experience) to help a decision-maker solve new decision problems. In this paper, we present the principles of Case-based systems in the context of complex equipment troubleshooting. We describe a case-based troubleshooting tool called SpotLight. We present our experience and observations with SpotLight applications at DuPont, Canada, and Bombardier, Canada.

Twin Deficits in India - A Theoretical Analysis

Debasish Sarkar

This paper makes a tentative attempt to explain the inter-relationship between budget and trade deficits under the broad framework of both the Neo-classical and structuralist approaches. This paper will also analyse how domestic infaltionary pressure arises from the interaction between the deficits.
